“The crux of the Kono Statement is the issue of people being forcefully taken away. There is no factual evidence to prove that there was coercion in the Korean Peninsula, such as [the authorities] breaking into people’s houses and taking women away. We should not bring dishonor to the history of our descendants. I think we should issue a new statement.” said Abe. “While [the first] Abe government adopted a cabinet resolution that there was no coercion, this is not known by many people. We need to reiterate that we made corrections to the Kono Statement.”
